Beautiful Buckhead Basement Renovation

We returned to our long-term clients’ home to complete this dreamy beautiful Buckhead basement renovation. As a young family of five, they wanted spots for family time, places for kids to play and gathering areas for the adults to unwind.

In addition, they wanted proper guest bedroom space for visiting in-laws. The basement in their 1970s home had been semi-finished before — it was time to elevate it to the next level.

Challenges in this project are common in basements. There were odd ductwork and soffits to conceal or integrate into the design. And we designed the lighting to keep the space feeling bright and aboveground.

First things first — all basements need a welcoming way to enter them. We had actually redesigned the stairs and some bookshelves underneath a few years prior, before our clients were ready to commit to an extensive overhaul of their basement.

With hardwood risers and a beautiful wood newel post and handrail, these stairs have stood the test of time. We also made sure this was well-lit for safety, and added custom molding for style.

We made the most of the space under the stairs by adding extensive custom bookshelves. This is a great spot for display and toy storage as well. With those elements established, it was time to move on for a complete basement overhaul on the rest of the space.

Past the stairs is a new window seat wall. We custom built this feature on site, leaving room for toy baskets underneath. This area also makes the most of a large window, a big asset in a basement.

We designed the ceilings in ways that integrated ductwork and supports in a way that looked intentional. This is key when making a basement feel inviting.

Because the window is under the overhang of a deck, we made sure to add light around it in the form of lovely sconces. Additional design features in this area include a textured wallcovering that adds warmth and interest, and a beautiful set of barn doors.

“These clients had fantastic taste, and barn doors with this special hardware was high on their wish list,” says Innovative Design and Build owner Clark Harris. “They wanted to give their visiting in-laws a really special bedroom and bathroom space.”

We fully gutted the basement to start fresh and give our clients everything they wanted from the ground up.

The new doors provide a special feeling as guest enter their private sanctuary down here. The bedroom also receives natural light, has ceiling light and a mix of lamps to keep it bright.

The bathroom includes a large shower stall for overnight guests. And lots of fun design features! This bold botanical wallpaper is one of our favorite selections this year. It provides such a joyful surprise to all who enter the room.

A chinoiserie mirror and Asian-inspired cabinet hardware complement the exotic wallpaper pattern. Note the way you can see the pattern behind the mirror frame. Warm metal finishes add elegance to the space.

A clear glass shower surround keeps the room feeling bright. Our interior designer team recommended an oversized subway tile so as not to distract from or compete with the wallpaper. A beautiful marble mosaic in classic hexagons cover the floor.

This part of the basement is the fun zone. Placed away from the bedroom, it’s a more public area. There’s a movie/game night play space with a large cushy sectional at one end.

At this end there’s a home bar, a kitchenette and a dining table that doubles as a game table.

I think the home bar is probably everyone at the company’s favorite part of this design. The homeowner had a lot of inspiration that she shared with our in-house interior designer Molly Trost. The bar also helps conceal some awkward structural supports for the upstairs fireplace!

Stylistically, long brass handles, an antiqued mirror backsplash and beautiful fretwork on the cabinet doors steal the show! So does the lovely blue finish on the custom cabinetry.

Craft beers stay nice and cool in the beverage fridge. And it blends right in with the rest of the bar cabinetry.

Also, don’t miss the lovely crystals that dangle from these elegant sconces. It’s the fine details like these that make this home bar extra special.

Across the room, the wine cooler has adjacent counter space for uncorking and pouring. These recessed items also helped to conceal more challenging basement elements. And they make good use of an often wasted spot — under-the-staircase space!

This cushy area at the end of the room has a custom upholstered ottoman that brings in more pattern. Also note that the TV is a Samsung Frame TV. These have become a real favorite among our clients. When turned off, they appear to be framed artwork.

This space is perfect for family movie nights, big game days with friends and sleepovers. It serves as a great spot for both relaxing and play. And the console has plenty of room for media equipment, board games and toys.
