Modern Farmhouse Basement Renovation

We recently renovated an unfinished basement into a beautiful living space with modern farmhouse style for a family in Roswell. They have parents who visit from another country, so they wanted a nice suite for them during extended visits. Also,  they were installing a pool. Because this walk-out basement would provide easy access, elements in the program were planned to serve the pool. Overall, they wanted a TV den, a kitchen to serve the basement and pool area, a guest suite including a full bathroom, room to stash pool supplies and towels and a home gym. Come take a tour of this modern farmhouse basement renovation.

Before

The basement was completely unfinished, but it was a walk-out. It already had large windows and doors to access the area where the pool would be. These elements were a great existing assets. Our clients are a young family of five, so the design was tailored to spending lots of family time together.

Wine Cellar Wine Display

Wine Cellar Under the Staircase

One of favorite features in this modern farmhouse basement renovation makes great use of an often-wasted space — the area underneath the staircase. At first we talked about nestling a daybed here, but eventually the decision was made to create a showcase wine closet. We created a custom picture window on the diagonal to show off gorgeous wine racks.

The built-ins we installed in the space offer several different ways to store and display wine. We also included room for glassware, making it easy to host tastings in the finished basement. The room also has a special floor tile with a subtle pattern.

A glass door around the corner provides access as well as another view into the wine room. Black trim adds a modern touch.

The Pool Drop Zone

The patterned floor tile from the wine room continues into this pool mudroom. In here we designed and built custom lockers for pool towels, swimsuits, flip flops and more. While our clients opted to install one full bathroom to serve the bedroom down here, they weren’t quite sure about adding a second bathroom at the time. So we roughed in a closet space that could serve as a second bathroom down the road. This will make it much easier to remodel when they are ready to do it in the future.

Horizontal shiplap adds a modern farmhouse touch along the back of the open lockers. And name tags for family members with coordinating hooks help our clients stay organized. Large baskets under the built-in bench are great for storing towels, pool toys, floaties  and flip flops.

Main Living Space

We placed the main living space in a spot that enjoys a lot of natural light. This is a favorite spot for the kids to hangout and for family movie nights. A new fireplace with a chunky wood mantel and horizontal shiplap in the built-ins add modern farmhouse touches. We also added cabinets that keep toys and games handy in the basement. We added a window seat to the existing window bay.

Open to the TV den, the kitchen also enjoys the natural light from the windows. Having a full-size fridge, sink, microwave and dishwasher conveniently located close to the pool makes it easy for our clients to serve drinks and snacks indoors and out.

The X-detail on the island, the farmhouse sink, Shaker-style cabinetry and wood floating shelves add modern farmhouse style. The island includes a built-in microwave drawer and a trash pullout.

Across from the island another bay serves as an eat-in area.

Basement Bedroom

Because of the topography of our clients’ yard, egress was not problem in the bedroom. French doors lead out to the yard. This bedroom helps transform the basement into a private apartment for guests. It also makes it feel like it’s on the main floor rather than “down in the basement.”

Modern Farmhouse Bathroom Style

The modern farmhouse vibe continues in the full bathroom. The  furniture-like vanity has a more rustic look, while clear glass sconces, matte black hardware finishes, large-format tiles with a concrete look and black finishes bring in a more modern feel.

Using a clear glass enclosure makes the room feel larger and lighter. The matte black finishes continue into the shower stall.

This corridor organizes the spaces in an elegant way. This is the view from the bottom of the staircase. The door on the back left leads to the bedroom and the French doors on the left lead to the home gym. These doors provide natural light in this windowless space. We used board and batten wainscoting to dress the walls.

The gym flooring is rubber for softer impact when working out. The mirrored wall helps bounce the light around, making the room brighter. It also helps it feel much larger.
