Warm Contemporary Basement Renovation
These Dunwoody, Georgia, homeowners had a long wishlist for their basement renovation. We created a layout that included a family room, dining area, beverage bar, game room, bike storage, a bedroom and a bathroom. And in spite of that long list, there is still plenty of breathing room. The warm contemporary basement renovation has updated style and a playful vibe. Come check out the details like the under-stair beverage bar, funky chairs that fold out into beds and a super-cool bike wall.
This photo shows a good basement trick up in the top right corner. Now, because basements usually get little to no natural light, you should grab it wherever you can. So we installed a French door that lets the light flow down from upstairs. And the view from up there down into the basement is lovely. Now that the basement is renovated, the view includes a beautiful staircase with pretty millwork and a textured runner.

Renovated Basement Family and Media Room
The basement has a very long space that we divvied up into a family room and a game room. At this end, a cushy sectional sofa is perfect for family movie nights. It also makes the space a wonderful private space for overnight guests like in-laws or grown children.
The flooring adds a lot of the warmth to the warm contemporary style. It looks like hardwoods but is actually luxury vinyl tile (LVT), a good option for basement renovations. The sliding barn doors on the left lead to a bedroom.

Basement Fireplace Before Renovation
It was wonderful that the basement had this existing asset. But it had seen better days.
Basement Fireplace After Renovation
We painted an existing fireplace white and added the TV as part of the warm contemporary basement renovation.
Under-Stair Beverage Bar
We love to make the most of spaces that are usually wasted. For example, under a staircase. Here it provided the perfect spot for a small beverage bar, complete with a beverage fridge. There was also a nice design opportunity here to add a cool tile over the bar.
Game-Play Room Before
Let’s pause a second for dramatic effect to take in what kind of condition the basement was in before we renovated. We’ve seen way worse, but it is still quite a difference!
Game-Play Room After
The Foosball table is one of the only things that remained. And now it has a high-top table and two comfy chairs around it.
Two Chairs with a Secret
This end of the room enjoys natural light from two full-sized windows. We love that our clients were drawn to cheery colors like mustard yellow and cool midcentury-inspired artwork. It all works so well in this corner. Also, these chairs have a secret! They fold out into single beds. These are handy for kids’ slumber parties and accommodating overnight guests.
Bike Storage Solution
The far end of the space has one of our favorite features, the bike wall. It almost seems like the hanging bikes are some sort of sculptural museum installation, with a bench to sit on and admire them. We used an easy-to-wash paint on this wall and the racks keep the tires from touching it directly.
The open floor space has an area rug for playing with toys and games or doing yoga. And the shelf unit provides plenty of room to store games, puzzles, books and exercise equipment.
Warm Contemporary Bedroom
The aforementioned sliding barn doors open to reveal the bedroom. A flat weave rug and wood headboard add warmth to the space, making it inviting for guests.
Warm Contemporary Basement Bathroom
A full bathroom has warm contemporary style. The wood vanity and patterned tile add traditional touches. Meanwhile the paneled shower enclosure, picket tile and matte black finishes make it contemporary.
