Stylish Update For a Sunporch
This stylish update for a sunporch was part of a larger scope of work on this Buckhead couple’s home. After living in their house for 15 years, they were ready for a refresh. The scope of the project included a new front door, and full renovations for bathrooms and the laundry room. it also included a down-to-the-studs renovation of a seldom-used sunporch.
The husband wanted a space that could be open to the outside where he could enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning in a space that felt like a bakery or bistro,” senior designer Sabrina Brown says. The result is a stylish update for a sunporch that forges strong connections between the house and the yard.

Sunporch Exterior: Before and After
Before: The sunporch had a lot of glazing. But we knew that our clients could add much more light to the space and create much stronger connections between indoors and out with a new design.

After: New metal doors with a dark copper finish let in the light from the floor to the roofline. We added transoms and side lites around the double doors to create walls of paned glass. And the modern gridded pattern of the new doors updates the facade of the sunporch in a fresh way.

The sunporch also has a new standing seam metal roof in dark bronze. This plays beautifully off the new door and new gutter system. A new copper lantern suits the home’s architecture. A mix of metals play nice together while also keeping things interesting!

Covered Grilling Patio
The glass doors continue on a second side of the sunporch, creating even more of a connection to the outdoors. They also provide easy access to the grilling space. A new overhang above this patio provides protection for the grillmeister during inclement weather.

Sunporch Interior
The doors and their surrounding transoms and side lites maximize the expansive views. In addition to the glass, materials connect indoors to out. One material that remained the same is the classic slate floor. We were able to clean it up and repurpose it, and It continues from inside to out. This forged a strong connection between the sunporch and the backyard.
Cafe chairs and marble-topped tables lend the bistro feel the husband was craving for his morning coffee experience. In fact, the new doors and windows, along with then new furniture make it feel like one of our favorite places to grab coffee nearby — The Chastain. We made sure there was ample room for a designated morning coffee-sipping chair.

Chic Home Bar
One of the most important features that makes the stylish update for a sunporch function is this chic built-in bar. It serves as a coffee station for a morning cup in the light-filled space. It also serves as as a cocktail bar when the homeowners are entertaining and as a buffet when they are grilling out on the patio and serving dinner on the sunporch.
The paint color on the home bar is Sherwin-Williams’ In the Navy. The countertop and backsplash are Desert Silver Silestone. This is a durable quartz with delicate veining that makes it look like natural stone.

Home Bar Elevation
This rendering shows how the home bar relates to human scale. It nestles right into the spot between the exterior wall and the stairs that lead from the main floor to the sunporch. As you can see, adding even a smaller apartment-sized fridge to this space would not have been as visually pleasing as using the fridge drawers was.

Concealed Chill
A key way to maintain the sleek look of the bar’s custom cabinetry is hiding behind these two large drawers. Can you guess what they are concealing?

Extra points for those who guessed that they were a fridge drawers! This keeps the half and half, sodas and mixers handy. The bar also has a panel-front icemaker that blends right into the cabinetry.
The streamlined drawer profiles match the rest of the inset bar cabinetry, including the slim Shaker-style rail details. The honey bronze cabinet hardware matches as well. This created a seamless look. This is so much better than having a hulking fridge take up space on the porch.

Floating shelves provide storage for glassware and coffee mugs. Two brass gooseneck sconces illuminate the shelves and countertop from above. And a bar sink makes it easy to rinse them off right here. A single-handle faucet with a champagne bronze finish maintains the sleek look of the bar.
The room is a balance of warm and cool tones. The navy bar and slate floor lean cool, while Benjamin Moore’s White Dove paint on the walls and bronze and brass finishes bring in warmth. Tongue and groove pine paneling with a Mountain Ash stain adds texture overhead.
As for literal cooling and warming, the room is climate controlled via a mini-split system. This allows our clients to enjoy the space year-round in comfort. A ceiling fan can add a breeze on extra-hot days.
