A Warm Contemporary Bathroom with an Efficient Layout and Plenty of Storage

We transformed this dated and clunky Brookhaven bathroom into one with warm contemporary style. This meant balancing sleek modern notes with the warmth of wood or subtle textures. The scope of the project was a down-to-the-studs renovation.

Our clients’ wish list included:

  • A light, bright and airy space
  • Modern style
  • Maximized comfort and storage
  • A spacious shower stall and a soaking tub

Before

Yikes! This was the space before. The layout was awkward, the countertops were low and the finishes were dated.

Layout

Fitting a soaking tub and generous shower stall into the layout was tricky. We used a wet room strategy, placing both behind the shower enclosure. This left room for a large window over the tub, a double vanity and extra storage. The wet room area turned out to be one of the most stunning features in the room. The frameless glass enclosure, large-format textured Irish Venezia Bianco tile and a window with privacy glass keeps the room light and bright.

Here is the floor plan before (left), and the renovated floor plan (right).

Warm Contemporary Style

The room has lots of clean lines  and a carefully edited material palette — both give it contemporary style. Keeping the material palette chicly minimalist allowed the beauty of each material stand out. The large-format shower tile has a subtle linen-like texture that adds dimension to this luxurious new space. And it adds a cozy feeling.

These materials also add warmth to the space. For example, the teak shower floor and white oak cabinetry with a tung oil finish add wonderfully warm natural finishes to the room. The Pietre gray quartz countertops and matte black accents lend a polished industrial vibe that suited our clients’ personal style.

Shower Details

The teak floor gives the shower a spa-like feel. And we left plenty of space for a teak bench that serves the shower and tub. Perhaps most importantly, we incorporated his-and-hers shower niches to make room for all of their shower products.

Storage Solutions

Functionally, this couple wanted a lot of storage. We included lots of of smart storage in the his-and-hers vanity and recessed medicine cabinets. In addition to the vanity, we added a tall countertop cabinet.

Tip: Consider incorporating drawers below the doors under a bathroom sink. Our clients find that this is a great spot for storing extra towels and is a much more efficient use of space than longer doors provide. Warm Contemporary Bathroom

We also outfitted some of the cabinets with specialty pull-outs, including a handy scale pull-out in the toe kick and a trash pull-out.

Thoughtful Details

The thoughtful smaller details make the room simply feel good, even if you can’t put your finger on why. Let’s take a look at a few of them.

For example, the coved crown molding creates a soft transition between the walls, the countertop cabinet and the ceiling. Similarly, full overlay cabinetry lends a pleasingly seamless look. And long, flat, integrated sconces flank the mirrors, maintaining the sleek, uncluttered style our clients craved.

Another thoughtful detail was extending the backsplash to reach the same height as the pony wall. Lines that continue around a room are easy on the eyes and lend a sense of balance. (Conversely, when lines stagger, are interrupted  or stop in odd spots they make our eyes do the same — this is not relaxing!) And other little things, like sourcing a teak shelf for the tub that matches the floor, simply make the space feel good.
